Officials from the Ontario Provincial Police held a press conference on Tuesday to announce the charges and Philbert’s arrest in Ottawa. In a statement, US Attorney Bryan Wilson of the District of Alaska said Philbert “conspired with others known and unknown to the United States to damage computers, and in the course of that conspiracy did damage a computer belonging to the State of Alaska in April 2018.” Wilson and Canadian officials noted that they received help in the case from Dutch authorities and Europol....

In a bid to “further protect the economy from cybersecurity threats”, the government is proposing [PDF] either a voluntary or mandatory set of governance standards for larger businesses that would “describe the responsibilities and provide support to boards”. While the crux of both options is similar, the mandatory code would require the entities covered to achieve compliance within a specific timeframe. A mandatory code would also see enforcement applied. A voluntary option would not require specific technical controls to be implemented and would rather be treated as a suggestion....

The investigation, conducted by the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) and the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), found that Clearview AI’s facial recognition tool scraped biometric information from the web indiscriminately and has collected data on at least 3 billion people. Last week, Interpol unveiled what it says is the “the first ever Metaverse specifically designed for law enforcement worldwide.” It says the “Interpol Metaverse” gives officers around the world the tools for cross-border knowledge sharing via avatars, and to take immersive training in forensic investigation and other policing activities. Interpol has also created an expert group on the metaverse to represent law enforcement concerns about the new virtual world. “Criminals are already starting to exploit the Metaverse,” Interpol warned....

And that future may play out in the next five years as market players make significant strides in the field. IBM, for instance, said it planned to produce a quantum computer capable of clocking at least 4,000 qubits by 2025. This would push the technology past experimental stage, with organisations able to deploy quantum computers within the 2023 to 2025 timeframe, IBM said. Such progress underscored the need to ensure there were skillsets ready to tap and support future deployment of quantum computing, said Dell Technologies CTO John Roese....
